Keeping That New Year’s Resolution

Keeping That New Year’s Resolution

The beginning of a new year is always a great time to make the commitment to get in shape. But before you change your diet, start an exercise program, join a gym or even hire a trainer, set yourself up for success.

First, evaluate your goals and make sure they are realistic. Dropping a pound or half-pound a week, with the right program, is a realistic goal. Dropping 25 pounds in two weeks is an unhealthy expectation, both physically and mentally. Aiming for your first 5K run by spring is a great goal. Eyeballing a marathon is a goal for next year.

Second, evaluate your commitment. If you are just caught up in the moment of losing weight or getting in shape before swimsuit season, you likely will find it difficult be successful. But if you are ready to make fitness your lifestyle by making the time to exercise, eliminating bad nutrition habits, and putting in the necessary work, you will be pleased with your results.

Third, be prepared to make incremental changes and not huge leaps. Beginning with small steps can make a big difference and will keep you from getting frustrated or burning out. Start with small changes in your diet, such as eliminating sugary soft drinks or fast food. Walk a mile and work up to walking and running one mile. Before long you’ll need a new pants size and that road won’t be so intimidating.

Fourth, lift weights. Resistance training is only the way to reshape your body. Plus adding muscle leads to more calorie burn throughout the day. Resistance training is important for men and women of all ages.

Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help. We all started somewhere. Getting help with your nutrition, with the weight room, and with other aspects of your fitness program is important. Understanding how nutrition and exercise work together and how to stay safe when you work out are critical to your success. Learning what to do also give you confidence and makes working out more enjoyable.
